Lion Dance & Kung Fu Show at the China Institute
New York Hung Ga is once again doing a lion dance/kung fu show at the China Institute to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year on Sunday, February 5, 2012. The show will be from 11:00 - 12 noon, outdoors (dress appropriately), and is free to the public. The address is 125 E. 65th Street.
Chinese New Year: The Year of the Dragon
January 23, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. Instead of the usual astrological information on Dragon personalities, here are some tidbits of the Chinese Dragon you may not know:
- The Dragon was the symbol of the Emperor of China
- Only he was allowed to wear that symbol on his clothes
- Anyone else who wore it was subject to death
In Hung Ga Kung Fu:
- The dragon trains the Spirit (unike the other animals, which teaches something physical)
- It also trains the twisting power
- It's associated with the Earth Element

The Hung-Ga Style: Traditional Techniques meet the "Real World"
The following article was written by our own Sifu Chris Alexander and published in "Legends of Martial Arts" magazine, including demonstration photos of Sifu Chris and Sifu Matt.
In my younger years, I was a bit of a rabble rouser, and from the start, always regarded the martial arts from a combative point of view. I studied some karate, some kickboxing, and some Thai boxing, all with the notion that one day I would be called upon to use them in some emergency (usually one that could easily fit into the plot of any martial arts movie). During the Eighties, my search ended: I took up Hung-ga Kung-fu, and ended up staying with the style.

About New York Hung Ga
New York Hung Ga is a kung fu martial arts school located in New York City. The Academy offers training in traditional Chinese martial arts: Hung Ga (a/k/a Hung Gar) Kung Fu, Shaolin Five Animals Kung Fu, San Da Chinese Kickboxing, and Competition Training.
Our Philosophy
At New York Hung Ga, we blend tradition with innovation. We continually seek improvement and progress in our style and are not afraid to incorporate new ideas and methods if they will make us better. We strive to evolve our art to make it relevant in today's world and still maintain the traditional values that has driven it for all these generations. We explore the modern fighting aspects of our art and temper it with traditional martial virtues.
Lion Dance
The tradition of lion dancing dates back over a millennia in China. The original reason for the lion dance was to scare away evil spirits; this has since evolved to include bringing good luck to those whom the lion dance honors and to help celebrate special events
Within the Hung Ga community, the lion dance is an integral part of its kung fu system; building strength, precision, solid footwork, ging, and cardiovascular training.
